Fellowship With The Word

The Will of God and Tradition or Customs

Acts 10:13-14 ESV [13] And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” [14] But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.”

Whenever you study the scriptures, think beyond stories and mere words. Examine the mindset that inspired the instructions, the responses, and actions that you encounter. When people speak, you can immediately understand how they think. One very reassuring truth that reverberates throughout the scriptures and God's interactions with men is that He is comfortable using imperfect men to execute his perfect will. So don't be in a rush to discount yourself as a vessel. Think about the opening verse for a bit. God is orchestrating events for salvation. But why will God have to use a vision with Peter in this case? It's because Peter's Jewish mind would have prevented him from following the men who came to invite him to preach, just because they were Gentiles (as revealed by his response in the vision). You can compare this to when God wanted to reach the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:26-30; he simply gave Philip very simple instructions without visions or dreams. Different mindsets! But think about it, what level of conditioning will it take for you to know God is talking to you and you expressly say "no lord". And verse 16 says this happened thrice. Remember, we examine mindsets, not just words. Sometimes letting go of culture, even in our walk, can be difficult because that's all we've really known. You may think Peter is extreme, but this is the daily pattern of most believers. The culture, traditions, and patterns of this world and its different societies have sculpted many souls. In Mark 7:8, 13 NIV, Jesus said [8] You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions...” [13] ...Thus, you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.” Peter's response didn't take God by surprise. But notice how patient God is with him. Peter doesn't stay that way. He grows and eventually renews his mind. Henceforth, always remember that God wants to express Himself on earth. And he wants to do it through you. And if the mindset you carry, the traditions and norms you observe, don't align with his will, you might just be resisting him. That's what it means to quench the Holy Spirit. Examine your ideals and embrace the kingdom culture and Christlike mindset. And be very intentional about it. Prayer: Lord, I lay aside every contrary thought pattern that contradicts your word and resists your expression and will. I'm renewed by your word daily, and I'm quick to embrace your thinking with humility. Thank you, father.
